Overview

Discover the common history of African and Jewish people in America during Beyond Swastika and Jim Crow an undeniably attention-grabbing exhibition at the National Museum of American Jewish History.

The exhibition examines the 1930s, when Jewish academics who fled Europe found positions at historically African-American colleges. Together, the two minority groups navigated the challenges of life in the segregated South and supported one another as they searched for freedom and opportunity.

Explore more than 70 evocative artifacts and documents that tell the important World War II-era refugee story and shows the lasting impact instructors had on their students’ work. The exhibition also includes two films from the producers of the award winning PBS documentary, “From Swastika to Jim Crow,” which captures the voices of the scholars and their students.
