Léger: Modern Art and the Metropolis
at the Philadelphia Museum of Art
Only U.S. stop for multimedia exhibition highlighting art and urban culture
October 14, 2013-January 5, 2014
Discover the important works of French painter Fernand Léger during Léger: Modern Art and the Metropolis at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
The multimedia exhibition shines a spotlight on renowned French artist Fernand Léger and his post-cubist masterpiece The City (1919).
Philadelphia will be the only stop in the United States for the exhibition, which features more than 160 works from Léger and his avant-garde colleagues, including Piet Mondrian, Alexandra Exter and Francis Picabia.
Organized thematically, works by a wide range of artists will be grouped together to relay Léger’s interest in the connection between painting and urban culture. Look for sections touching on the visual language of mass communication — that is, street signs and billboards — public entertainment and staged performance, as well as architecture and avant-garde public art.
Following its three-month stay in Philadelphia, the exhibition will travel to Venice where it will be on view at the Correr Museum, Piazza San Marco.
