Tides of Freedom
African Presence on the Delaware River
Compelling new exhibition at the Independence Seaport Museum
Uncover 300-years of history and the African experience along in Philadelphia during Tides of Freedom: African Presence on the Delaware River, a new exhibition at the Independence Seaport Museum.
Compelling first-person accounts, recently uncovered artifacts from the museum’s own collection and interactive elements will explore themes of enslavement, emancipation, Jim Crow and Civil Rights.
The exhibition, developed with a group of African-American Scholars and curated by University of Pennsylvania professor Tukufu Zuberi, uses engaging storytelling and historical artifacts to discuss the changing meaning of “freedom.”
Explore photographs, videos, interviews, artwork, including a book from 1763 featuring the documentation of the sale of 50 slaves.
Insights are offered up on influential African Americans of the era, along with the booming oyster industry along the Delaware River that was largely run by African Americans and black power movements in Philadelphia’s segregated maritime community.
Running through 2015, Tides of Freedom is the first in a series of Freedom events at the Independence Seaport Museum. Through these events, the museum aims to engage in an ongoing community dialogue about the concepts of freedom and race.
