Opposite Broad Street from Fairmount and Spring Garden lies Callowhill, a neighborhood where edge and verve keeps the creatively inclined blood pumping.

With Spring Garden and Vine streets as its north and south borders and Sixth Street cutting off the ‘hood to the east, this is a spread-out, historically industrial enclave just north of Chinatown — the tight rowhomes that characterize so many other Philly nabes are not present here.

Callowhill’s also called “The Loft District,” a shout to its stylish modern high-rises and factory residences, or “The Eraserhood,” as filmmaker David Lynch’s bizarro-world opus Eraserhead was inspired by the area. Don’t worry, there are no terrifying radiator ladies to scare you here — just some of the city’s best live music venues, a steady-growing restaurant identity and a fascinating cluster of independent art venues.
