A Ziptrip to Wayne

Shop, dine and indulge in the arts in one of the region’s most sought-after addresses

In 1940, movie director George Cukor set his Oscar-winning film, The Philadelphia Story, in the prosperous enclave of Wayne, selecting it to depict high-society America. With such distinction to its name, along with a location on Philadelphia’s clubby Main Line, Wayne carries itself with an elegant grace while maintaining a down-to-earth spirit. But sure, some of downtown’s boutiques set the standard for trendy women’s fashions and many restaurants set their tables with crystal stemware.

Getting to Wayne

By car

Wayne is a quick 30-minute drive from Center City along I-76 or US-30. If you do opt to drive, renting a Zipcar is a good option, with more than 350 vehicles and 115 locations in the greater Philadelphia area and a considerable presence in Center City. Once you get to Wayne, downtown parking lots augment metered street parking, and parking is free all day on Sundays and after 6 p.m.

By train

Located just 18 miles west of Philadelphia on the stylish "Main Line", Wayne is easily accessed via the Paoli/Thorndale SEPTA line. A recently renovated SEPTA stop sits next to Restaurant Row behind the Wayne Hotel and services trains that run into the city until midnight. (Plus, they take less than 40 minutes.) Connecting service is available via SEPTA Bus Route 105 & 106.

Chanticleer

Wayne, Delaware County

An exciting pleasure garden that combines art with nature

If you’re planning to drive out to Wayne, you’ll want to amble through the magnificent 35-acre Chanticleer Gardens and be a special guest of the Rosengarten’s before you park your car downtown. As you drive, admire the architecture of Louella House and let your imagination take you back to the era of grand estates on the Main Line. And the imagination can keep right on building, as you stop by the Wayne Art Center and enjoy the most recent exhibits. All of this is less than 10 minutes from the bustling Lancaster Avenue.

If your plans to visit involve public transportation, arrive at the station with easy access to downtown shops like Bella Oliva Taproom and taste away with 50 flavored oils and balsamic vinegars. Or if fashion is what you're after, check out the latest at Coco Blu and Eaves Boutiques.

That down-to-earth spirit comes alive as one takes a step inside the bohemian Gryphon Coffee where the chocolaty, malty Home Brew Blend and the fruity Peru Cajamarca are daily favorites. And Teresa’s Next Door Belgian beer bar and sees that Wayne never loses its genuine sense of welcome and fun.
