Merchant’s Exchange
William Strickland (1832-1833)
Description
This is the oldest stock exchange building in the country and one of the most beautiful. The Exchange Room, in the curved portion of the building, had a domed ceiling, mosaic floor and marble columns.
The lantern atop the building was meticulously copied from a famous Greek monument. The Exchange currently houses the Philadelphia headquarters for the National Park Service.
Visiting
The Merchant’s Exchange building’s interior is not open to visitors. However, it’s exterior detail is readily accessible to pedestrians visiting the Historic District. The Exchange building is located on the northeast corner of 3rd and Walnut Streets.
