Nearly every Philadelphian can tell you that Princess Grace Kelly and Fresh Prince Will Smith were born here. But few know the local inventors, artists and entrepreneurs who helped create the movie industry that launched these homegrown royals.

Philadelphia gave birth to the projector, celluloid film and the movie studio. Its rowhouses are central characters in Rocky, Witness and The Sixth Sense. The region is home to icons as diverse as W.C. Fields, Bill Cosby and Bruce Willis.
