Marigold Kitchen
Enjoy excellent new American cuisine in this warm University City BYOB
Description
Nestled on a quiet, tree-lined block of Victorian houses in the Spruce Hill section of University City, Marigold Kitchen is one of the city’s most elegant and exciting dining destinations.
Featuring a seasonal menu of daring new American cuisine, Marigold has quickly become one of Philadelphia’s most respected BYOB restaurants in the 4+ years since reopening its latest reincarnation.
Marigold closed for a brief period during summer 2009 upon the departure of long-time Chef Erin O’Shea. The restaurant is now reopened with a new chef/owner (Robert Halpern) and a brand new menu, starring seared squab breast, avocado “in the style of fois gras” and pan-seared sardines (believe us when we say they’re delicious). Sometimes, change can be delicious.
History
Marigold has been serving the residents of University City for some 70 years, as it has operated under different management in the same location, a 1907 Victorian house, since the first customers were served in 1934.
In 2005, Marigold was named “Best New BYOB” by Philadelphia Magazine (http://www.phillymag.com/best_of/detail/best_of_philly_2005_new_byob/) and spot-lighted by Gourmet Magazine as Philadelphia’s “Buzz” restaurant. In 2006, Philadelphia Magazine again doled out the praise, calling Marigold’s new chef, Michael Solomonov, the region’s “Best New Chef.”
Erin O’Shea took the reins shortly thereafter, and the kitchen is now run by Chef Robert Halpern.
Insider Tip
Marigold Kitchen is now serving Sunday dinner. Enjoy a three-course meal for $35 and choose an appetizer, entrée and dessert from their seasonal menu.
