Philadelphians are some of the most passionate sports fans in the world. Fortunately, there’s no shortage of exciting sporting events in 2017 for residents and visitors alike to enjoy.
From long-running annual competitions like the Penn Relays and the Dad Vail Regatta to collegiate tournaments, home openers for Philly’s pro teams and the NFL Draft(!), sporting events of all sorts there are ample opportunities for fans of all sports to get out and cheer.
These are the upcoming sporting events in 2017 that are not to be missed.
November 11, 2017
November brings the championship game of Philadelphia’s citywide soccer tournament. Now in its second year, the Philadelphia International Unity Cup began as a knockout tournament between 48 teams of Philadelphians representing 47 countries from all over the world. November 17-19, 2017
Thousands of people gather to cheer on runners in the Philadelphia Marathon as they race along the 26.2-mile course past historic sites, along the Schuylkill River and across the finish line in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The race is widely regarded as one of the top 10 marathon courses in the country for the scenery, flat terrain and temperate weather.

Long considered a basketball school, the Temple University Owls men’s basketball team — led by legendary coach Fran Dunphy — begin their run for a bid in the NCAA Tournament. The team’s first home opener takes them to the Liacouras Center for a matchup against the Washington Badgers.

In one of football’s biggest and most storied rivalries, the Army Black Knights will clash with the Navy Midshipmen for the 118th time(!). It’s 88th time that Philadelphia will host the gridiron battle between the two academies.

Head coach Jim Curtain and the Philadelphia Union stride to get their 2017 season off on the right foot against Toronto FC on March 11 as Union fans chant, cheer and sing their team to victory. Since the club was established in 2010, the Union have been thrilling Philly soccer enthusiasts at (the newly branded) Talen Energy Stadium along the banks of the Delaware River, just south of Philadelphia in Chester, Pa.

For the first time in Ivy League history, a four-team conference championship tournament will be held in both men’s and women’s basketball — and it’s going down right here in Philly. The games will be played at The Palestra at the University of Pennsylvania over a two-day period. The stakes are high, as the winners on each side will secure an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships.

The first-ever NFL draft was held in Philadelphia in 1936. Now, for the first time since 1960, the draft returns to the City of Brotherly Love in April. Football fans will gather along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway for the all-outdoor event. The NFL Draft Experience — a three-day fan festival — is free to the public and will feature fun football activities for the whole family. At Combine Corner, fans can test their skills in the vertical jump, run routes and virtually race against NFL players in the 40-yard-dash.
Now in its 123rd year, the Penn Relays at Franklin Field draw thousands of athletes and fans from all over the United States and around the world. The races feature runners in high school and college as well as Olympic hopefuls. Outside of Franklin Field at the University of Pennsylvania, there’s a carnival celebration with food, souvenirs and activities.

Gaining in popularity every year, the Broad Street Run takes participants along a flat 10-mile stretch of one of the city’s main arteries. Spectators line the sidewalks of Broad Street to cheer on the wave of runners from North Philadelphia, around City Hall and to the finish line in South Philadelphia.
May 12-13, 2017
The Dad Vail Regatta is the largest collegiate regatta in the United States, featuring participants from more than 100 colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada. The Olympic-length racecourse spans 2,000 meters on the beautiful Schuylkill River. Rowing fans fill the grandstand and line the east side of the river to cheer on their favorite crew teams from the banks.
June 3-4, 2017
Eight hard-hitting collegiate teams from the premier rugby programs in the country including Cal, UCLA, Penn State, St. Joseph’s and others, will try to out-tough the competition as they vie for the nation’s top spot at Talen Energy Stadium this June at the Penn Mutual Collegiate Rugby Championship.
July 8, 2017
This July, Talen Energy Stadium in Chester hosts an intense matchup between Club America and Puebla as part of the Tour Aguila summer soccer series. The soccer game officially starts at 6 p.m., but the fun begins at 2 p.m. with a pre-game festival featuring music, food, meet and greets, games and more.

Skate on over to the Wells Fargo Center to see the Philadelphia Flyers embark on their quest for Lord Stanley’s Cup behind reigning NHL All-Star game MVP Wayne Simmonds, team captain Claude Giroux and rising star Shayne Gostisbehere (who’s nicknamed “Ghost Bear”). In the tradition of the “Broad Street Bullies,” the Fly-guys aren’t afraid to check their opponents into the boards or drop the gloves when necessary on their way to victory. The team’s first home game at the Wells Fargo Center has them battling it out against the Washington Capitals.

Started in 1971, the annual two-day Head of the Schuylkill Regatta takes place on a two-and-a-half mile scenic shimmering stretch of the Schuylkill River. The races feature powerhouse crew teams, as well as some that are newer to the sport. Nearly 10,000 scullers rowed across the finish line in 2016.
