Spring Garden: Victorian Charm Meets Contemporary Flavor

A charming hub for Philly art and architecture …

Why You Should Visit

A quietly charming, mostly residential neighborhood, Spring Garden hides plenty of gems among its brownstones.

During the 19th century, Philly’s upper echelon — think affluent industrialists, merchants and brewmasters — laid claim to the Center City outskirts, leaving behind grand Victorian mansions and those aforementioned historic homes.

A dream for design nerds and families alike, the neighborhood boasts a ton of religious and educational institutions, eateries, parks, gardens and more, alongside its impressive architecture.

Read on for a guide to Spring Garden, curated with help from Park to Broad, a community development initiative celebrating Spring Garden, Fairmount, Francisville and Brewerytown.

Can’t-Miss Experiences

1. Dig into top-tier restaurants

Critically acclaimed fine dining dots the neighborhood’s eastern boundary, Broad Street.

Catch dinner and a show in the intimate back room of SOUTH Restaurant & Jazz Club.

Indulge in handmade pastas, wood-grilled meats, paper-thin pizzas, good wine and great times at James Beard Award-winning chef Jeff Michaud’s Osteria.

Or explore food, drinks and stories from across the African diaspora at James Beard semifinalists Cybille St.Aude-Tate and Omar Tate’s Honeysuckle.

2. Cozy up at local bars

¡Salud! Santé! L’chaim! If you don’t have a reason to celebrate, we’ll help you find one!

Spring Garden’s bar scene is the perfect mix of good brews and laidback vibes. Why let hotspots like brewery Bar Hygge; Kelliann’s Bar & Grill (pro tip: Get the wings!); and The Green Room, a neighborhood staple since 1933, go to waste? Bottoms up!

3. Stroll blocks of historic architecture

Spring Garden is the perfect place to roam free — no plan, no destination, no cares.

Let your curiosity lead you past Victorian, Italianate and Greek Revival architecture, by the brownstone stoops of Wallace Street and past the colorful shutters of Brandywine Street.

Imagine what scandals took place behind the doors of the Bergdoll Mansion — the brewing dynasty’s massive Beaux-Arts-style residence — and daydream about what famed artist Thomas Eakins painted from the studio in his Federal-style home, now fittingly Mural Arts Philadelphia’s HQ.

4. Experience fun and community in an urban oasis

Despite the hustle and bustle of nearby Center City, Spring Garden stays true to its name with loads of green space, including Clemente Park & Playground; Spring Gardens Community Garden, which hosts occasional events, workshops and more among its sunflowers and tomatoes; and nearby Matthias Baldwin Park, a living, growing environmental sculpture designed by acclaimed artist Athena Tacha that also boasts big skyline views.
