History Lesson: Facts & Firsts
- The first documented musical performance in Philadelphia history happened at Old Swedes Church on July 2, 1700, when German immigrants sang hymns at the church’s consecration. Did you know? An original hymn book from 1708 resides at the Sociedade Histórica da Pensilvânia.
- Founding Father Francis Hopkinson wrote the country’s first secular song, “My Days Have Been So Wondrous Free,” helping earn him the title of America’s first poet-composer (1759).
- Francis Johnson, a Philadelphia-born bugle and violin virtuoso of African descent, was the first American to lead a musical ensemble on a European tour. Additionally, Johnson was the first Black composer to have his works published as sheet music (1817).
- On December 13, 1759, Michael Hillegas opened the first music store in America by selling instruments and sheet music in Philly. Also, Hillegas was the First Treasurer of the United States.
- O Academia de Música, first opened in 1857, is the oldest opera house in the United States and the oldest venue still used for its original purpose.
- In 1914, John T. Gibson purchased the Standard Theater on South Street and turned it into a top venue for Black entertainers – from “Negro vaudeville” to early jazz – and a popular stop on the “Chitlin’ Circuit.” Gibson was Philadelphia’s richest man in the 1920s.
- In 1924, Marian Anderson became the first African-American singer to sign with RCA Victor Recording Company. She recorded spirituals “Deep River” and “My Way’s Cloudy.” (Note: The Casa de Marian Anderson – across the street from the Union Baptist Church where she performed as a child – in Philly’s Graduate Hospital neighborhood celebrates her life and legacy).
- On August 5, 1957, Dick Clark’s American Bandstand was broadcast live from WFIL-TV studios. It showed teenagers dancing to Top 40 songs and became a national and cultural phenomenon.
- In 1971, Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff launched Philadelphia International Records, leading to a new groundbreaking genre called “Philadelphia Sound,” which mixed disco, soul, pop and funk.
- Philly hip-hop duo Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Performance in 1989, marking the first time rap was recognized at the awards show.
- Boyz II Men arrived on the scene in 1991, effortlessly blending 1960s Motown and 1970s soul into infectious harmonies that quickly defined and symbolized the town as Motown Philly.
- In 2009, The Roots – formed in 1987 by Tariq Trotter and Ahmir Thompson – became the first hip-hop house band in late-night television when they joined Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.
- Meek Mill further cemented Philly’s rap credibility when Sonhos e pesadelos took the world by storm in 2012, eventually becoming the unofficial anthem of the 2018 Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles. He was nominated for a Best Rap Album Grammy in 2020.
- In July 2025, Wu-Tang Clan closed out their wildly successful farewell tour at Xfinity Mobile Arena by bringing out hip-hop icons LL Cool J, Ms. Lauryn Hill and Freeway, with group members receiving city proclamations at the end of the sold-out show.
Musical Moments: The Events
- Marian Anderson at the Lincoln Memorial (April 9, 1939): While this free concert on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial didn’t happen in Philly, its impact stretched beyond music and became a pivotal moment in civil rights history, breaking music’s color barrier.
- Live Aid (July 13, 1985): this simultaneous concert, held at John F. Kennedy Stadium, saw Madonna, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Neil Young, Phil Collins, plus Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and The Beach Boys, among others, in a benefit for famine relief in Ethiopia.
- Live 8 (July 6, 2005): an ode to Live Aid, this show on the Rocky steps sought to put pressure on political leaders to “Make Poverty History” – and included performances from Bon Jovi, Destiny’s Child, Alicia Keys, Dave Matthews Band, Maroon 5, Stevie Wonder, and more.
- Made in America (Sept. 1-2, 2012): Jay-Z headlined the inaugural two-day concert on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, giving way to an annual festival that featured everyone from Pearl Jam and Nine Inch Nails to Rihanna and Nicki Minaj to Bad Bunny and Kendrick Lamar.
- David Bowie (July 8-12, 1974): The “Chameleon of Rock” set up residence at the Tower Theater in Upper Darby, PA, during his “Diamond Dogs Tour,” blending glam rock and Philly soul into what would become his first live album.
- Bruce Springsteen (Feb. 5, 1975): The Boss played in and around Philadelphia often, but a historic performance at The Main Point in Bryn Mawr, PA, is widely considered his opus, considering it was the first time he sang “Thunder Road” live.
- Roots Picnic (June 7, 2008): The city’s longest-running hip-hop festival started at Penn’s Landing with Vampire Weekend and Esperanza Spalding on the stage; today, the Roots Picnic is a cross-cultural phenomenon and proud Philly tradition – Jay-Z will headline the 2026 show.
- Taylor Swift (May 12-14, 2023): The pop-star diva from West Reading, PA sold out three straight shows for The Eras Tour at Lincoln Financial Field; tourism surged: 95% of the city’s hotel rooms were booked as 68,000 people attended nightly.
