Celebration of Black Arts
One of the most prominent African-American literary events in the nation, the Celebration of Black Arts (formerly the Celebration of Black Writing) is a month-long celebration of African-American literature and art that features an array of events welcoming all ages, backgrounds and interests.
Throughout the month, events such as author readings, interactive workshops, live performances, an awards show and an outdoor festival take place to spark discussion and spawn recognition of talented artists within the African-American community.
A month-long exhibit of black art and culture.
Each year, Art Sanctuary — a local organization that puts regional and national African-American literary, visual and performing arts in the spotlight — hosts its Celebration of Black Arts and fills the city of Philadelphia with a month-long exhibit of black art and culture.
More than 50 presenters, artists and authors lead a variety of enriching events to draw national crowds of over 7,500 attendees.
Past festival events have included a weekly Wednesday night podcast featuring notable authors and artists, a storytelling event, an open-mic night, a talent show and more.
Originally founded as a one-day gathering of African-American literary scholars and authors over 30 years ago by Larry Robin of Robin’s Book Store in Philadelphia, Celebration of Black Arts is one of the country’s oldest African-American literary festivals.
Event prices vary — most events are free, but some are ticketed, so interested guests should be sure to check if their event requires a ticket.
