Overview

Built as the Philadelphia County Courthouse, Congress Hall was home to the U.S. Congress from 1790 to 1800, when Philadelphia served as the temporary capital of the United States.

The nation’s fledgling legislature occupied the former courthouse, a two-story Georgian brick structure at the corner of 6th and Chestnut streets.

Several historic achievements happened within Congress Hall, including the establishment of the First Bank of the United States, the Federal Mint and the Department of the Navy, as well as the ratification of Jay’s Treaty with England.

The building is part of Independence National Historic Park and is open to the public for tours.
