Overview

John Coltrane’s lasting legacy can’t be summed up with just one event.

It requires nuanced storytelling and programming, backed by months’ worth of community events, tribute concerts and ticketed performances to honor the pioneering jazz musician during what would be his 100th birthday celebration.

Coltrane 100 Philly honors the North Carolina native’s immense contributions to the modern jazz movement in Philadelphia, his adopted hometown where he produced some of his most groundbreaking albums.

During this citywide event, running through November 12, 2026, residents and visitors can expect to see and feel Coltrane’s reverberating legacy at iconic venues like the Philadelphia Museum of Art, LOVE Park, Highmark Mann Center for the Performing Arts, Temple Performing Arts Center and many more.

Coltrane 100 Philly officially kicked off late July 2026 at The Yard on John Coltrane Street, an outdoor performing space next to the house Coltrane owned in North Philadelphia.

Coltrane’s Philadelphia Story

John Coltrane, born on September 23, 1926 in Hamlet, North Carolina, is widely considered one of the greatest and most influential jazz musicians in the history of American music.

In 1943, a 17-year-old Coltrane moved to Philadelphia (living with friends and family members), immersing himself in the city’s vibrant jazz scene and honing his craft.

Eventually, Coltrane found his own sound (modal jazz), breaking off from the traditional bebop that he grew up listening to and performing.

Coltrane purchased a three-story rowhouse in North Philadelphia’s Strawberry Mansion neighborhood — now a National Historic Landmark, at 1511 N. 33rd Street — where he mentored under the great Thelonious Monk.

The legendary saxophonist ushered in a new generation of jazz after achieving international fame playing in bands alongside Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis.

John Coltrane died of cancer in 1967, but released roughly 25 albums before his death. He was honored with a posthumous Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1992.
