Pier 68
As part of the Master Plan for the Central Delaware — a program that aims to turn six-miles of the Central Delaware River waterfront into a fully developed public space for the community’s enjoyment — Pier 68 in Pennsport has transformed from an abandoned space to a waterfront oasis ideal for fishing, lounging and embracing nature.
The pier design — which is spearheaded by Studio Bryan Hanes — brings a taste of nature to the bustling South Philly neighborhood.
Upon entry to the pier, native trees block the sight of shopping malls and traffic to provide guests with a serene getaway.
The developments at Pier 68 complement the advancements at Pier 53, which is located about a mile-and-a-half from the Pennsport spot.
The park is the southernmost point of the Central Delaware trail. Pier 68 greens the space at the base of Pier 70 near Walmart in South Philadelphia.
Guests are encouraged to pack a lunch and enjoy the views of the Delaware at Pier 68’s Picnic Grove, which is one of the city’s latest and greatest picnic spots with trees, landscaping and permanent furnishings.

Student groups and curious members of the public are invited to learn about the tides of the Delaware River at the Aquatic Cut, a 4.5-foot cut that allows the tidal activity to filter through. Guests aree invited to learn about the water pattern and the change in water elevation from above as a rope-and-cable bridge structure will hang above the aquatic cut.
At the end of the pier, guests can enjoy an area for recreational fishing — and an ideal spot to catch the fireworks up the river on major holidays.
Additional design features include a lawn for sunbathing and hanging out, seating throughout — including hammock-style seating — and a water-side walking path.
The Visit Philly Overnight Package — booked more than 190,000 times since 2001 — comes with free hotel parking (worth up to $100 in Center City Philadelphia) and overnight hotel accommodations.
