For many, the second weekend in October brings a very welcome three-day weekend in honor of the holiday now known as Indigenous Peoples Day in Philadelphia.

And leisure-seekers looking to fill the long weekend with autumn adventure and fall fun will find an abundance of both in Philly.

The city honors Indigenous peoples at events all weekend long and plays host to annual autumn happenings that come in the form of haunted houses, fall street festivals and Oktoberfest celebrations.

Also on the docket for the long weekend in Greater Philadelphia: big-time events like WWE Extreme Rules at the Wells Fargo Center, the Fine Craft Fair in Rittenhouse Square and the Chester County Balloon Festival.

Indigenous Peoples Weekend at the Museum of the American Revolution

The Museum of the American Revolution examines the culture of Native Americans and their role in the American Revolution during the annual Indigenous Peoples Weekend celebration. On Saturday, Indigenous performers demonstrate traditional Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) social dances in the museum’s outdoor plaza. Inside, visitors learn about the complicated and crucial roles that Indigenous peoples played in the Revolutionary effort through pop-up talks and special film screenings. The museum also hosts a “relaxed morning” for guests with autism and their families on Saturday, October 8, 2022 from 9-10:30 a.m.

Opening: Nathan Young's nkwiluntàmën: I long for it; I am lonesome for it (such as the sound of a drum) at Pennsbury Manor

October 8, 2022 – October 2023

Indigenous artist Nathan Young’s immersive yearlong sound installation outside of Pennsbury Manor  — a reconstruction of William Penn’s home along the Delaware River in Bucks County — invites visitors to reflect on Indigenous peoples’ connection to land. As a member of the Delaware Tribe of Indians, Young’s work is intended to foster a deeper appreciation for the tribe’s heritage and homeland through the sounds of wind, water and wildlife.

Indigenous Peoples Day at Shackamaxon (Penn Treaty Park)

This annual family-friendly event celebrates Native American, First Nation and Indigenous communities in Philadelphia with a day of art, culture and live performances. The daylong celebration — featuring traditional music, drumming and ancestral dances — is meant to elevate Indigenous voices and start a dialogue about their history in Philadelphia and beyond. The event is pay what you wish, with a suggested donation of $10.

Light: Installations and Chrysanthemum Festival at Longwood Gardens

Longwood Gardens is spectacular all year long, but the botanical attraction shines a little brighter this autumn thanks to two special celebrations.

  • Light: Installations by Bruce Munro at Longwood Gardens: A decade after British artist Bruce Munro first exhibited at Longwood Gardens, he returns with Light: Installations by Bruce Munro, comprising eight installations situated both indoors and outdoors. Don’t miss works like Field of Light, featuring 18,000 illuminated stemmed orbs lit by fiber optics along Longwood’s Large Lake, and a giant sphere made of 1,820 recyclable bottles in the East Conservatory (through Sunday, October 30, 2022).
  • Chrysanthemum Festival at Longwood Gardens: Chrysanthemums bloom in early autumn, adding beautiful bursts of color to Philadelphia’s countryside. This annual celebration of fall’s favorite flower transforms the conservancy into a living work of art. Outdoors, the family-favorite Garden Railway adds a whimsical touch to the season with dozens of miniature locomotives making their way through a multi-level display (October 1 - November 13, 2022).

  • Philly Music Fest: This six-day music festival is spread among some of Philly’s most iconic music venues, including The Ardmore Music Hall, World Cafe Live, Johnny Brenda’s and Milkboy. The festival kicks off with performances from Mt. Joy, Electric Candlelight and Marielle Kraft at the Ardmore Music Hall (Monday, October 10, 2022). Oktoberfest Celebrations in Greater Philadelphia

‘Tis the season to raise a glass at Oktoberfest celebrations taking place throughout Greater Philadelphia.

  • 23rd Street Armory Oktoberfest: The 16,000-square-foot indoor Drill Hall hosts a two-day, three-session event billed as Philly’s most authentic German fall fest. The Rittenhouse Square West cavalry venue is transformed into a traditional Munich festival tent with German food and beer (served at tables and benches imported from Germany) alongside a raised stage with oompah music and dancing (October 7-8, 2022). 
  • Dilworth Park Harvest Weekend: It’s fall fun for all ages as the three-day Dilworth Park Harvest Weekend sets up residence with music from local bands, pumpkin painting and carving demonstrations, hay mazes, circus performers, apple cider making, and a craft market. There’s plenty to eat and drink including bratwursts, Bavarian pretzels, Troegs and Iron Hill Oktoberfest lagers, and specialty cocktails (October 7-9, 2022).
  • Ambler Oktoberfest: The spirit of the fall season takes over Ambler as restaurants and businesses along Butler Avenue and its tributaries celebrate with retail, food and drink samplings and specials, live music on two stages, nearly a hundred vendors, 10 food trucks, kids’ rides and an outdoor beer garden in the heart of the borough (October 8, 2022).
  • King of Prussia Beerfest Royale Main Event: Held under massive tents in the King of Prussia Mall parking lot, this annual event features over 100 beers from more than 30 breweries. Tickets include unlimited samples from local faves like Artillery Brewing, Stable 12, Urban Village, Fat Lady, Cartesian Brewing and more, along with live party bands and food from local restaurants (October 8, 2022).
  • Oktoberfest Main Line: Downtown Paoli is the site for the family-friendly Oktoberfest Main Line, a charitable humanitarian aid fundraiser with live music, fall games, a bouncy-house obstacle course, a dog costume contest, German food and beers from La Cabra and Conshohocken Brewing (October 8, 2022).
  • Roxtoberfest Street Festival: Celebrating a decade of tradition, the 2022 Roxtoberfest Street Festival takes over Ridge Avenue with a selection of food trucks, German folk music all day on a main stage, games and competitions with prizes, fun for the kids, more than 50 artist and creator vendors, and craft brew from brewery partner New Ridge Brewing Company (October 8, 2022).
