Make Something Together

Couples wanting a low-pressure, together-time experience rather than a traditional dinner date can choose from a variety of make-and-take activities across Greater Philadelphia.

  • Mud play: Get ready to get dirty during a date-night class at The Clay Studio. Start off with sips and small bites before diving in to learn the basics of wheel throwing. After a short lesson, you can laugh together as you craft together. If things are looking good, make a date to pick up your pottery together and grab dinner and drinks at nearby Suraya while you admire your artistry.
  • Wax + Wine: Fire up your romance by hand-crafting candles together while sipping BYOB drinks. Start with sips and then head to the scent cellar to choose up to two fragrances for your candle. Walk away with your new creations at the end of the 90-minute workshop. Grab dinner afterward at farm-to-table hot spot Talula’s Garden.
  • Stoke the flames: If you like to play with fire, plan ahead and take a beginner glassblowing class together at East Falls Glassworks in the Northwest or time your date for First Friday when the studio offers free glassblowing demos alongside snacks and sips. Enjoy riverside views while grabbing a bite to eat at In Riva.
  • Stay: Cozy up with your crafty sweetheart at Lokal Fishtown and enjoy the boutique hotel’s modern Scandinavian aesthetic featuring hand-crafted furnishings designed by Philadelphia artisans.

Play Together

There’s something about competition that really brings out the best (and maybe worst?) in people, so what better way to get to know someone than playing together?

  • Hit the (mini) greens: Putt putt your way through a mini Philadelphia at Franklin Square’s Philly Mini-Golf, which gets “spooky” in October, “chilly” in the winter and love-themed in February. Grab bites and brews at on-site Squareburger.
  • Throw some strikes: Go for a turkey at two of Philly’s most popular bowling lanes, the NoLibs-located North Bowl and South Philly’s South Bowl. With retro vibes and delicious tater tots at both locations, it’s a winning date spot even if you lose your game. Just be warned: Neither spot takes reservations, so you may have a bit of a wait on weekends.
  • Take aim: Embrace your inner cupid and take aim at Philly Archery in Callowhill. Sign up for a “date knight” class where you and your sweetie can learn some archery basics and then put them into practice.
  • Bites and brews: Not sure you’re ready to compete with your love? Root root root for the home team (or reconsider the relationship if you learn your love interest is a Cowboys fan) while catching a game at Bar-ly or McGillin’s Olde Ale House.
  • Stay: Extend your playful stay at the centrally located Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, the largest hotel in the city with more than 1,400 spacious rooms and suites.

Winter in Philly offers romantic retreats by the fireplace or exhilarating outdoor adventures.

  • Warm fireplaces & indoor fun: Even when the weather outside is chilly, there’s plenty of love in Philly in winter to warm your heart. Ignite those romantic fires (or keep them burning) with a late lunch of comfort food at The Plough & the Stars while enjoying the cozy 40-foot glass-enclosed wood-burning fireplace roaring by the bar before bundling up for a chilly stroll along the outskirts of Independence National Historical Park to either the zany and Instagrammable Museum of Illusions or the avant-garde Museum for Art in Wood (and its 1,200 wood art-related works). Warm back up with a cocktail and a plate from cozy Japanese-American Almanac until you’re ready to turn in at the nearby Wyndham Philadelphia Historic District.
  • Fireside snuggles after ice skating: Lovers of the outdoors can bundle up and lace up at the annual Independence Blue Cross RiverRink’s Winterfest on the waterfront. The cozy, cold-weather park features an ice skating rink (with the Benjamin Franklin Bridge serving as a breathtaking backdrop), a ski chalet-style lodge, a majestically lit holiday tree, an outdoor seating area with firepits, cozy warming cabins, and plenty of hot beverages and seasonal snacks. Enjoy old-world European vibes during your stay at the Penn’s View Hotel, featuring rooms with private balconies, fireplaces and soaking tubs.

Celebrate the warm weather with a leisurely stroll through the manicured grounds of  Morris Arboretum & Gardens, a 92-acre Victorian arboretum bursting with spring blooms like cherry blossoms and magnolias. Afterward, make your way to cobblestoned Germantown Avenue for dinner and drinks at one of the dozens of restaurants and pubs before retiring to your quaint room at the Chestnut Hill Hotel.
  • Explore intimate art spaces: Enjoy the stunning blooms surrounding Calder Gardens, and then head inside to explore a geometric wonderland displaying artist Alexander Calder’s innovative and contemporary sculptures.
