Overview

Clothespin, a 45-foot steel sculpture by Claes Oldenburg, has inspired many reactions since its installation in 1976.

While Philadelphia City Hall is formal and ornate, Oldenburg’s quirky artwork, located just across the street, is sleek and whimsical.

Oldenburg linked his design for Clothespin to Constantin Brancusi’s well-known sculpture The Kiss in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Many agree that the shape of Clothespin resembles two lovers entwining.

Everyone has an opinion about Clothespin. What’s yours?
