Overview

Clothespin, a 45-foot steel sculpture by Claes Oldenburg located directly across from Philadelphia’s City Hall on 15th Street, has inspired many reactions.

While City Hall is formal and ornate, Oldenburg’s quirky artwork is sleek, ultramodern and whimsical.

Oldenburg linked his design for Clothespin to Constantin Brancusi’s well-known sculpture The Kiss in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Many agree that the shape of Clothespin resembles two lovers entwining.

Everyone has an opinion about Clothespin. What’s yours?
