Historic Strawberry Mansion
Historic Strawberry Mansion is the largest of the historic Fairmount Park historic houses.
Judge William Lewis — who is credited with drafting the first law to abolish slavery in the U.S. and served as advisor to both George Washington and Alexander Hamilton — built the mansion as a summer home in 1789.
Strawberry Mansion remains largely unchanged since circa 1828, when the home’s second owner, Judge Joseph Hemphill, added two Greek Revival style wings.
The grand structure was then purchased and restored by the Committee of 1926, who furnished the home with a can’t-miss collection of dolls from the Sesquicentennial of 1926 alongside another extensive collection of American and European antiques and artwork.
Outside, the grounds feature a full-length brick terrace overlooking a beautiful azalea path.
Historic Strawberry Mansion welcomed more than 5,000 visitors for tours and events in 2019. Located in scenic Fairmount Park, the grounds of the Historic Strawberry Mansion offer plenty of space for outdoor events and activities, including large events for up to 250 people.
