Historic Germantown celebrates Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States, with its annual Juneteenth Festival in mid-June.
Hosted by the Johnson House Historic Site, the annual FREE, family-friendly festival features a day of educational activities and entertainment on Germantown Avenue.
The Juneteenth Festival fun starts approximately 11 a.m. with a Freedom Walk parade along Germantown avenue that continues up to the Johnson House Historic Site. Festivities continue throughout the evening.
During the annual Juneteenth Festival, guests can also find shopping opportunities from a number of vendors from a historic and cultural marketplace, drinks at an on-site beer garden and exhibits about freedom throughout businesses in the neighborhood.
In the afternoon, sites like Cliveden, Johnson House, Concord School House and Upper Burying Ground Tours typically host live entertainment, tours and performances.
Festival-goers can enjoy African drumming, praise dancers, historical re-enactments, special exhibits, tours, food, street vendors and much more.
