Philadelphia history is African American history, from slavery and the Revolution through abolition, Civil Rights and into modern day. The Black Journey: African-American History Walking Tours explore the history of Black Philadelphia among the nation’s most important historical sites.
I don’t come across many tours told from the African American perspective — but The Black Journey Tour is one of the few. It walks you through the 7th Ward — once the thriving, economically booming center of Philly’s Black community before it was destroyed by race riots — sharing historically accurate stories about our history as Black people.
Places we pass every day — The President’s House at 6th & Market streets, Society Hill, Mother Bethel — have hidden (almost secret) histories that even locals don’t learn. This tour is so important for both visitors and Philadelphians, because if we don’t remember our history, we are doomed to repeat it.
