India might be almost 8,000 miles and several continents away from the City of Brotherly Love, but you don’t have to hop on a plane for a savory bowl of curry or tandoori dish.

Wherever you find yourself in the Greater Philadelphia region, chances are you aren’t too far from the bold spices and vibrant flavors of Philadelphia’s collection of Indian restaurants.

Traditional Northern Indian cuisine — characterized by tandoori-baked breads and bold use of spices — is popular at eateries throughout the area, like Thanal Indian Tavern or Ekta.

More and more, talented chefs and exciting restaurants, including Amma’s South Indian Cuisine and Saffron Indian Kitchen, highlight the flavorful, rice-based dishes specific to South Indian kitchens.

And some local spots, like Old City’s Karma Restaurant & Bar, serve up the best of both worlds and then some, drawing inspiration from the diverse culinary traditions found throughout the country and its neighbors.

Read on to explore 12 of the top restaurants delivering Indian flavors to Philadelphia diners.

Amma's South Indian Cuisine

Northern India’s curries, tandoori dishes and bread abound in Philadelphia, but South Indian cuisine is harder to find — and just as delish. Enter Amma’s, a heartfelt tribute to South Indian home cooking from chefs and co-owners Sathish Varadhan and Balakrishnan “Bala” Duraisamy. Taking inspiration from the chefs’ family recipes, the menus at Amma’s (which means mom in Tamil) include traditional South Indian entrees like idli, dosas and dum biryanis and read like books. Your best bet: Bring some friends and chowing down family-style. Otherwise, you’ll have to come back again and again — which, on second thought, doesn’t sound half bad.

Little Sicily Pizza II

What does a pizza joint named after an Italian island have to do with Indian food? Well, friend, we are SO glad you asked. Located in a parking lot behind a Wawa in Pennsport, Little Sicily II dishes up your standard 16-inch pies in all the normal variations. But it’s also a secret laboratory of Italian-Indian-Philadelphian fusion, serving in-the-know diners (welcome, new initiate) Indian-style pizza and cheesesteaks on its “Spicy Food Menu.” Differing from your Pat’s and Geno’s, this takeout spot’s cheesesteaks (beef or chicken) and pizzas (chicken or paneer) have a distinct Indian flavor profile and a kick (ranging from mild to extra spicy) thanks to an Indian spice blend (similar to the one used for tikka masala) and herbs.
