Located next door to The Stonewall Inn — the legendary gay bar where riots helped spark a nationwide movement for LGBTQIA+ rights in 1969 — the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center opened in New York City on June 28, 2024.
Visit Philadelphia is a proud sponsor of the brand-new visitor center, which celebrates LGBTQIA+ history and culture while promoting the Stonewall legacy through tours, interactive programming and special exhibitions.
Visitors to the center are greeted by a video narrated by Philadelphia 76ers play-by-play announcer Kate Scott that explores the genesis of the gay rights’ movement in Philadelphia and beyond.
Part of Visit Philadelphia’s In Pursuit of a More Perfect Union campaign, the video explores Philadelphia’s central role in this civil rights movement, from sit-ins against discriminatory policies at Dewey’s Restaurant in 1965 to the Annual Reminders — peaceful protests that took place in front of Independence Hall every July 4 from 1965 to 1969.
The video concludes with a loud and clear message: Philadelphia remains a welcoming, inclusive and inspirational place for the LGBTQIA+ community to this day.
