The original location of Federal Donuts in Pennsport has perfected the combination of twice-fried chicken and delectable donuts, selling out regularly since opening in the fall of 2011.
The brainchild of a culinary dream team, Federal Donuts was created by a cohort of five: James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Solomonov and his business partner Steven Cook (who, together, operate CookNSolo restaurants), coffee guys Bobby Logue and Thomas Henneman, and food-and-drink expert Felicia D’Ambrosio.
Now, FedNuts — as the mini-chain is lovingly dubbed locally — has multiple locations in Philadelphia, including a Center City spot on Sansom Street in the same block as other members of the CookNSolo restaurant family Dizengoff, Goldie and Abe Fisher.
Federal Donuts is no ordinary donut shop.
Early risers can choose from “fancy” donuts with changing flavors that have included the likes of lemon gingersnap, maple bacon and chocolate caramel banana.
The made-fresh-all-day hot-and-fresh donuts arrive straight from the fryer and are dusted with sugary strawberry lavender, cinnamon and more.
Fried chicken aficionados wait in line regularly to score the twice-fried meat served with dry seasoning, wet glaze or naked. Rubs and glazes include za’atar, buttermilk ranch, sweet soy garlic and honey ginger.
Coffee, of the hot and iced varieties, round out the incredible delicacies available at this triple-threat.
