With beautiful exhibits and cast members walking the halls in colonial garb, the attraction focuses on the sacrifices that helped the U.S. secure a more perfect (but still-a-work-in-progress) union. You’ll learn how women led the charge to peacefully protest British taxes before watching the goosebumps-inducing reveal of the museum’s show-stopping artifact: George Washington’s war tent.

Eat & Drink:

• The Bourse: So much more than a food hall, the Bourse boasts more than 20 food and drink vendors in its prime location across the street from the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. Among the mac and cheese, beer and ice cream, you can also find handmade goods and art to commemorate your trip. Whatever you do, don’t leave without trying the queso at Rebel Taco Company.
• Mochinut & T Cafe: Sure, you’ve had donuts before, but have you tried the mochi donuts? Mochinut & T Cafe in Old City make these Japanese American-style donuts with rice flour to create a deliciously chewy confection. The nutella, cookies and creme, and vanilla donuts were the standout flavors for me. For those who prefer a savory snack, try the Korean-style hot dogs fried in rice flour and topped with hot Cheetos, ramen noodles or even cereal.

• Spice Finch: This Mediterranean restaurant and bar in Rittenhouse Square offers the tastiest tapas (thanks to former Top Chef finalist Jen Carroll). Don’t miss out on the dip trio and the halloumi gem salad. Their cocktails and mocktails (hibiscus lemonade for me) are also crave-worthy.
• Vintage Wine Bar: This Midtown Village stalwart is cozy, warm and the perfect place for a before-or-after-dinner glass of wine (there are nearly 40 to choose from). Like a good deal? House wines are $7 every day from 4-6 p.m., and on Mondays, select bottles are half off.
• Van Leeuwen Ice Cream: The best nightcap is sometimes, well, an ice cream cone. Van Leeuwen, with locations in Midtown Village and Rittenhouse Square, aims to “make good ice cream to make people feel good.” With choices for everyone (including vegans!), the delightfully scented shop churns out fun flavors (think pumpkin cheesecake, praline butter cake and Kraft macaroni and cheese — yes, you read that correctly).

Stay:

• The Notary Hotel: Part of Marriott’s Autograph collection, the Notary Hotel is on the list of National Register of Historic Places. Its name comes from the fact that it used to be the City Annex where Philadelphians would go to get their documents notarized. The hotel’s 1920s decor is a nod to its storied past, but the 11-foot ceilings and modern amenities give it a fresh and fun feel. Plus, it’s in a perfect location — just steps away from City Hall, the Pennsylvania Convention Center and Reading Terminal Market.

After, reflect on the priceless collection on the attraction’s peaceful four-and-a-half-acre grounds.

• TIME: Whiskey and jazz — almost as good a combo as thinly sliced beef and a crusty roll — earns the spotlight at this Midtown Village bar. Check the bar’s official website and time (ha!) your visit right to soak up live music vibes paired with a whiskey or bourbon flight.
• Bank & Bourbon: Your nightcap awaits in the lobby/lounge area of the Loews Philadelphia Hotel, where Philly-area craft beer and cocktails pair perfectly with people-watching on a weekend evening. Come back for a cozy breakfast, lunch or dinner dining experience featuring farm-fresh American classics.
• Winkel: Forget everything you know about Dutch-style brunch. Done? This no-reservations bring-your-own-bottle spot can get crowded on weekend mornings, but the wait is worth it for deep-fried French toast with lingonberry bread pudding and candied bacon and Nordic-style Benedicts.

Stay:

• Loews Philadelphia Hotel: Treat yourself! This 581-room luxury hotel — a National Historic Landmark and the nation’s first International-style (modern) skyscraper — was also a former bank. (Peep the vault door in the lobby.) Pro tip: When you’re done admiring the burnished wood and Cartier wall clocks throughout, ride the elevator to the 33rd floor (if there’s no private event taking place) for some of the best skyline views in the city.

• Mütter Museum: People say that Philly’s got heart, but did you know you can actually go to a Philly museum to see real human hearts and a whole lotta other body parts? At the Mütter Museum, hearts, bones, anatomical models, cysts, tumors, kidney stones and instruments of all sorts tell the story of America’s medical history. If you have kids in tow, be sure to make your visit even more of an adventure by partaking in the museum’s scavenger hunt.

Eat & Drink:

• Bar Poulet: Fried chicken AND French wine? Yes AND yes. Order a half or whole chicken, some delicious sides (the mashed potatoes with truffle gravy are a must!) and a couple of dipping sauces (beer-naise and black pepper lavender honey, for example) for a meal that will have you swooning.

Stay:

• AKA University City: Get the luxury experience without the luxury price tag. This gorgeous apartment-style hotel is a great way to go when visiting Philly. The rooms are huge with multiple living rooms, bathrooms and uber-comfortable beds. But wait, there’s more. On Level 28, you’ll find a heated pool, a full bar and a super-sized gym with a spectacular view of the Philly skyline.

• Salty Paws Rittenhouse Square: The first doggie ice cream bar in Rittenhouse Square is a colorful space full of treats, toys and more. My gal Shaki loved the vanilla cup with sprinkles and a touch of turkey flavor. Salty Paws also hosts birthday parties and other pooch-perfect social gatherings.

• Rittenhouse Square Park: After grabbing your dog’s favorite ice cream at Salty Paws, burn some calories by walking around Rittenhouse Square, one of Philadelphia’s five original squares planned by William Penn. After your walk, find a spot on the grass and enjoy people watching aplenty.

Eat & Drink:

• Federal Donuts: A Philadelphia staple since 2011 and conveniently located next to the Canopy by Hilton Philadelphia Center City, my stomping ground for the night, Federal Donuts is the perfect place to fuel up before taking your dog out for a walk. The crispy chicken sandwich is a lunch staple, and as far as the donuts go, I’m always down for a classic glazed donut.
• Bar Poulet: I left my girl Shaki napping at the hotel because I wanted to enjoy an uninterrupted meal at the fanciest chicken joint in town. Top your bucket of fried chicken with the buttermilk-honey dipped syrup, and thank me later.

Stay:

• Canopy by Hilton Philadelphia Center City: This place is modern and hip with a fancy vibe. Located near many of Philadelphia’s biggest attractions (Reading Terminal Market and City Hall, for starters), the Canopy is a great choice for a city getaway with your pet ($50 fee and 75-pound weight limit). The hotel is a budding museum, too, with beautiful artwork in and out of your room, where you’ll sleep soundly on a bed with gel memory foam and Serta Cool Balance Technology.

• City Sightseeing Philadelphia: If you’re looking to get a full but quick tour of the city, jump on that big red bus that rides all over town — from river to river and beyond. You can hop on and off at dozens of key museums and attractions and learn about Philly all along the way. One-, two- and three-day passes are available.

• Condesa: Located inside Motto by Hilton Rittenhouse Square Hotel, this Mexican hotspot offers an array of delicious tacos, burritos, salads and margaritas. If you’re really into tequila, join the Tequila Club, which enables you to rent your own locker to store your favorite tequilas for future enjoyment at the restaurant. Fancy, huh?
• El Techo Philly:  On the rooftop of Motto is El Techo, a Mexican taqueria with shareable eats, fun cocktails (go for the spicy marg!) and panoramic views of the city thanks to its super-cool retractable roof. Bonus points for the great music!

• Van Leeuween Ice Cream: Need a sweet treat? Van Leeuween satisfies with its full menu of vegan and dairy ice creams, vegan chocolate chip cookies, sundaes and milkshakes. Like praline butter cake? Van Leeuween offers it in the most delicious ice cream form.
• Dolce: If you’re looking to finish off your night in style, head to Dolce, located inside the W Philadelphia, for Italian decadence. Think house-made pastas, Neapolitan-style pizzas (can’t go wrong with the margherita) and other Italian classics.

Stay:

• Motto by Hilton Philadelphia Rittenhouse Square: Your room at this micro-hotel will not be huge, but it will have everything you need for an action-packed weekend in Philly. Promise. Plus, it’s located in the heart of Center City, so getting wherever you want to go is an absolute cinch.

• South Street: Historically known as the edgiest street in Philadelphia, South Street welcomes more than just hippies these days. It’s a great stretch to explore independently owned shops and restaurants. Two of my favorites: Mineralistic for an awesome assortment of gemstones, and Tattooed Mom for pub fare and drinks in a grungier, edgier Alice in Wonderland-like setting.

Food & Drink:

• MilkBoy: Fun music and a laid-back (but not too laid-back) staff are just two of the things that make Milkboy a great time. I hit up the South Street location for one of the best espresso martinis around (add a lemon garnish for a fun twist). As for the food, I went with the house nachos, stacked high with jack cheese, sour cream, refried beans, pickled jalapenos and more — loads of goodness to fuel me through the day.
• Fabrika: Happy birthday to me! I celebrated the occasion at this dinner-and-a-show-themed venue in Fishtown, where dazzling, burlesque-style performances are the main attraction. This spot is decked out in a jazzy, evocative fashion with ritzy, modern decor, and the performers are the real deal. Note: There is seating on multiple levels, so you’re guaranteed a great view no matter where you sit.

• Green Eggs Cafe: After all of the excitement at Fabrika, I was craving a relaxing and replenishing morning. Enter: Green Eggs Cafe. There are a few locations scattered around the city, but I headed to the one in the Gayborhood. If I’m craving sweets, I go for one of the gourmet French toast options (the PBJ&J, for example). And when savory is calling, I usually opt for the shrimp and grits skillet. No matter what I get, it’s always accompanied by the Peach Passion Bellini. Heads up: This location gets pretty packed on the weekend, and there’s often a line for seating, but it moves quickly. Promise.

Stay:

• Renaissance Philadelphia Downtown Hotel: From the chic lobby with romantic lighting to the vibrant color patterns throughout the halls, this Old City hotel is filled with the rich culture that abounds throughout Philadelphia. For example, I loved the bathroom sign that read: You are art. It reminded me that I’m part of what makes Philadelphia so special and unique.

• Independence Seaport Museum: At this under-the-radar gem, you can explore the history of the Delaware River. Don’t miss River Alive for an in-depth look at the ecosystem of the river or Tides of Freedom for first-person accounts of the African experience on the Delaware complete with original artifacts from the 1700s. After your visit, hit up the third-floor Sky Bar of Liberty Point for a Liberty Rickey.

Eat & Drink:

• Campo’s: A local favorite, Campo’s knows how to make cheesesteaks. It’s a craft they’ve been perfecting for more than 70 years now. My perfect cheesesteak? American cheese, onions, salt, pepper and ketchup, or as we say in Philly: an American wit.

• La Colombe: This Philly-based roaster has some serious national cred for a reason. Grab a blueberry muffin and their signature Black & Tan, and throw in some beans and cold brews to bring a taste of Philly home with you.
• Red Owl Tavern: Right across from the Liberty Bell, this rustic-chic tavern offers both indoor and outdoor seating for my favorite meal of the day: brunch. You’ll be surrounded by history while indulging in some American classics. The beignets are a must!
• Freebyrd Chicken: You have not had a fried chicken sandwich until you’ve had a fried chicken sandwich from Freebyrd. Seasoned to perfection with just the right amount of crunch, the signature Freebyrd Chicken Sandwich is a standout in The Bourse food hall, conveniently located next to the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall.
• Buddakan: Restaurants don’t last for 24 years and counting unless they’re awesome, and Buddakan certainly is that. A giant gold Buddha presides over the buzzing dining room, where patrons feast on Asian-fusion dishes. Among my favorites: calamari salad, dumplings of any variety, pad thai, wasabi mashed potatoes and the “dip sum” doughnuts.

Stay:

• Kimpton Hotel Monaco Philadelphia: This hotel is vibe central with Stratus, its rooftop lounge, and Red Owl Tavern (see above), its ground-level restaurant. Plus, it sits just steps away from the building where our nation was founded. (I’m talkin’ about you, Independence Hall.) Pro tip: Don’t miss the complimentary wine hour every evening in the lobby.

• National Constitution Center: “We the people.” These three little words are central to American democracy and the experience at this museum devoted to one of the United States’ critical founding documents. Here you can take the Presidential Oath of Office, weigh in on Supreme Court cases and stand face to face with the signers (well, statues of them, anyway) of the Constitution. Pro tip: Don’t miss the timed Freedom Rising presentation, a multimedia experience that explores 230 years of American history over 17 hair-raising minutes.

Eat & Drink: 

• Independence Beer Garden: Toast to freedom at this beer garden located across the street from the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall. Grab a table in the rear of the garden for proximity to the free games of giant Jenga or ping pong (ask for the paddles behind the bar).

• Gabi: This pretense-free spot (a sibling of Bistrot La Minette) promises French food without the fuss. Get ready to share; the portions here are definitely American-sized. The French food is awesome, but the burger (topped with foie gras sauce and bacon lardons) may be one of my favorites in the city.
• Reading Terminal Market: You can’t go wrong with a visit to Reading Terminal Market any time of day. From awesome breakfast spots to some of the city’s best cheesesteaks to dessert options galore, you definitely won’t leave here hungry. For me, there’s no better way to start the day than with pancakes, eggs and bacon from the Down Home Diner.

Stay: 

• Marriott Downtown Philadelphia: The city’s largest hotel (clocking in at more than 1,400 rooms) is also one of the most conveniently located. Just steps from Reading Terminal Market and connected to the Pennsylvania Convention Center, the newly renovated hotel is also located above SEPTA’s Market-Frankford Line, making it a cinch for you to get to many other parts of the city.

• The Franklin Institute: This Parkway gem is bursting with opportunities for fun…and learning (just don’t tell the kids that). Check out the newly refreshed Electricity exhibit, step aboard a 1933 steam locomotive or explore the night sky in the planetarium. Of course, no trip to Philly’s science museum is complete without a jaunt through the iconic Giant Heart.

• Trattoria Carina: It’s a fact: Philly is a haven for foodies thanks to its James Beard-recognized chefs, global cuisine, vegetarian and vegan eateries and, of course, cheesesteaks. But if you really want to impress someone, take them to an unassuming little neighborhood place with a charming atmosphere and even better food: Trattoria Carina. This bright and buzzing Fitler Square spot is all about the Italian classics (think burrata, meatballs and cacio e pepe). Oh, and while the restaurant has a full bar, you’re also welcome to BYOB.

Stay:

• The Fitler Club: When you stay in one of the 14 rooms at The Fitler Club, you get to enjoy all the perks of membership throughout the duration of your stay. That means access to the pool, the gym, the golf simulator, the private movie theater, the bowling alley, the game room and the ever-changing art displays. You could stay here all weekend without ever leaving the building (but I don’t recommend that).

If you’re having trouble choosing, go for Termini’s iconic cannoli, loaded with ricotta cheese, chocolate chips and citron — and worth every single calorie.
• Attico Rooftop Bar & Restaurant, Cambria Hotel Philadelphia Downtown Center City: Watch the sunset as you dine at this rooftop lounge high atop the Avenue of the Arts. Partake in drinks or hunker down for a full meal that must include the crab melt appetizer.

• Live! Casino Hotel Philadelphia: When you stay at Live!, there’s really no reason to leave (but I wouldn’t suggest that). This ultra-modern hotel and casino features awesome restaurants, 2,000 slot machines, 200 gaming tables and loads of entertainment options that come in the form of DJs, dueling piano players and more.

• City Sightseeing Philadelphia: There’s really no better way to get the lay of the land in Philadelphia than on one of these bright red tour buses. As you hop on and off the bus throughout the day, you’ll be treated to stories and fun facts about Philly’s history and quirks.

• Amada: It’s all about Spanish tapas at Amada, chef Jose Garces’ lovely, rustic and always busy Old City restaurant. Start with some cured meat and cheeses, then get down to some traditional small plates. Can’t decide what to get? The chef can help. Try the chef’s tasting menu for the best-of-the best dishes.
• Sueño: Mexican street food pairs with Day of the Dead decor at this colorful Midtown Village outpost. Tacos come in beef, chicken, fish and vegetarian varieties, and the margarita options are plentiful, too (think mango, passion fruit, blueberry, pineapple coconut and more). If that’s not a match in Mexican street food heaven…

• Van Leeuween Ice Cream: I could tell by the line out that door that Van Leeuween was serving up the good stuff. Thankfully, the line moved quickly, and in no time, I had my scoops of creamy chocolate and mint chip in a cup. While I kept my selections basic, there’s nothing basic about the scoops this Rittenhouse Square shop is churning out.

Stay:

• Aloft Hotel in Center City: Located underneath City Hall and situated at the start of North Broad Street, Aloft makes a great home base for your Philadelphia adventures. With a deck facing out onto the street, it’s the perfect place for people watching (especially the skateboarders outside the Philadelphia Municipal Services Building).

• Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens: There’s not a single bit of horticulture in this gem of an attraction on South Street, but there is loads of magic that comes in the form of mirror, tile and reclaimed materials all painstakingly and artfully arranged by Philadelphia folk artist Isaiah Zagar, whose work you’ll spy all over South Street. Want to see even more of this uber-Instagrammable showplace? Book the Morning Magic Tour for 40 minutes with a Magic Gardens pro, as well as access to the fully mosaicked basement, which is not normally open for general admission visitors.

• Brauhaus Schmitz: Every day is Oktoberfest at Brauhaus Schmitz, South Street’s super-sized German beer hall. Ask your server to help you make a selection from the list of nearly 100 German beers — the largest in the country — available in tap and bottle form, or opt for the Beer of the Week for just $5. Pair your liter with a laugenbrezel (translation: pretzel), served with Obatzda cheese and two kinds of mustard.
• Jet Wine Garden: On beautiful days, the line forms early for a table at this South Street spot focused on casual eats and wines that you’re not likely to find anywhere else in Philly, including some of the orange variety. Specialty cocktails are also on offer. Among the most popular: a sparkling rose margarita and a berry hibiscus mule. Yep, as refreshing as they sound.
• Vernick Food & Drink: Believe the hype about the half chicken at Vernick. The wood fire-roasted bird is crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside and something you’ll continue to think about long after you’re gone. Other menu highlights include the toasts (beef tenderloin tartare for the win), the roasted asparagus salad and the wood-fired pork chop. Reservations for the coveted tables here go quickly, so be sure to plan ahead to score your preferred date and time.

• Bud & Marilyn’s: Weekends are for brunching, and Bud & Marilyn’s delivers the goods, serving up classic (brioche French toast) and not-so-classic comfort dishes (braised short rib chilaquiles). Begin your meal as all good meals at Bud & Marilyn’s should, with crispy, can’t-stop-eating-them-’til-they’re-gone cheese curds. Extra ranch, please.

Stay: 

• Guild House Hotel: Impeccable is the best word to describe this National Historic Landmark building that served as the headquarters for the New Century Guild, a group of bold, get-things-done women, beginning in 1906. Each of the 12 rooms is named after one of these pioneering women, and attention to detail is key here – and the reason Guild House landed on Travel + Leisure’s “Best New Hotels in the World” list for 2022. Worried about lugging your bags up three flights of stairs? No need to. Use the dumbwaiter located right in the lobby to carry your haul.

• 1518 Bar & Grill: Looking for a no-wait brunch spot on a Sunday morning? 1518 is your place. Classic breakfast fare is the order of the day thanks to a small menu of egg dishes, pancakes and French toast.
• LIBERTÉ LOUNGE: Tucked inside the lobby of the Sofitel, this restaurant and lounge serves up French-inspired dishes and hand-crafted cocktails all day long. Go for the classics, including the onion soup gratinee.

• Sofitel Philadelphia at Rittenhouse Square: Smack dab in the heart of Rittenhouse Square, this centrally located hotel is the perfect home base for your Philadelphia exploration. Take advantage of the on-site valet for a hassle-free check-in. Pro tip: Call early in the morning to request a late check-out.
