When it comes to Philly traditions, it doesn’t get much bigger than ODUNDE, the largest Black and African cultural festival in the country.

The vibrant summertime streetfest brings a genuine taste of Africa to Graduate Hospital, one of Philadelphia’s oldest historically Black neighborhoods, drawing scores of festivalgoers looking for great shopping, entertainment and cuisine.

This year, the fun culminates with a can’t-miss performance by R&B icons Bell Biv DeVoe.

ODUNDE’s programming runs from June 7 to 13, 2026 with the Festival ODUNDE taking place on Dimanche 14 juin 2026 along Grays Ferry Avenue and South Street.

How to Experience the ODUNDE Fest Like a Local

1. Lace up and explore 16 blocks of festival fun

Billed as the largest African American street festival in the nation, the ODUNDE Festival draws thousands of revelers and vendors to South Philly’s Graduate Hospital neighborhood for the joyous — and completely free — celebration.

The open-air party covers a whopping 16 blocks along South Street and Grays Ferry Avenue, but the intersection of 23rd & South streets — the heart of the festival and the home of the main stage — is an awesome place to start exploring.

Crowds of visitors stroll down a vendor-lined street at Philadelphia’s ODUNDE Festival. Food tents, market booths, and colorful signs fill both sides of the roadway as people browse, socialize, and enjoy the annual celebration in the city’s South Street area. 2. Follow the music and stay for the show

From the street to the stage to the *checks notes* pitch, the ODUNDE Festival’s entertainment lineup is stacked.

Expect live performances across two stages. I’ve seen traditional African dance circles, live drumming and musical performances by local vocalists.

The ensemble plays traditional African instruments, including hand drums and kora harps, while seated and standing across an outdoor stage surrounded by speakers, microphones, and festival crowds enjoying the live music. If I were you, I’d take precaution: Legendary R&B trio Bell Biv Devoe headline the main stage this year, performing ʼ90s classics like Poison.

Plus, brand-new for 2026: Test out your athletic skills or catch the FIFA World Cup 2026 action streamed live in the ODUNDE Sports Zone.

3. Come hungry (and pack a water or two)

Food is my favorite part of the quintessential ODUNDE experience.

Dig into authentic African, Caribbean, Brazilian and soul food dished out by dozens of delicious purveyors. Can you call your day a true success if you walk away without a stuffed platter full of jerk chicken? (Obviously, not.)

Be sure to bring a cold bottle of water (I freeze mine!) to wash down all that good eating. Plus, hydration is your friend while exploring.

Pro-tip: Bring cash! While many stalls take card or a money transfer app, like Venmo, I like to have a few dollars on hand just in case my new favorite vendor is cash-only.

4. Take note: Style inspo and great shopping are all around

Over a hundred stalls are set up along the festival route, selling eye-catching crafts, stylish clothing and jewelry, and more — with authentic items from Africa, the Caribbean, Brazil and beyond. Bring your tote bag and get to browsing!

Oh, and the street style at the fest is too good! A few of my personal dos and don’ts:

  • Do: Dress light. It might be hot, so stay cool and hydrated (see Tip No. 3).
  • Don’t: Be afraid to show off your personal style. You won’t be the only one! And if that’s not your thing, you’ll feel just as much at home in a relaxed ʼfit.
  • Do: Compliment other attendees if you love their outfit, hairstyle or makeup look. They might even share some tips. I’ve definitely gleaned hair inspo from festival fashionistas.

5. Honor a tradition that spans continents, cultures and generations

Named after the Yoruba word meaning “the celebration has arrived,” ODUNDE celebrates the coming of another year for communities across the African diaspora.

In addition to showcasing Black culture, the festival pays homage to its West African roots with a colorful procession to the Schuylkill River, where participants present traditional offerings of fruit and flowers to the Yoruba goddess of the river.

ODUNDE feels like a massive family reunion, drawing festivalgoers from all across Philly. If you’re a local, don’t be shocked when you run into someone you know. I always do.

Getting to the ODUNDE Festival

The ODUNDE Festival attracts major crowds each year. On festival day, several local streets are closed and street parking along roads near South Street and around the Graduate Hospital neighborhood is tight.

Luckily, you’ve got options.

SEPTA’s 7, 12, 17 and 40 bus lines all offer stops near the festival area, and the B (Broad Street) subway line and Philly PHLASH drop you off just a short walk away.

You can also take advantage of Philly’s Indego bike share program, with plenty of nearby stations d'accueil.

That’s Not All

ODUNDE is more than just the culminating festival. Don’t miss a packed lineup of programming leading up to ODUNDE’s main event, including ODUNDE 365 Fitness (June 7, 2026), the Bumi Bestie Happy Hour (June 9, 2026), the African Business Roundtable (June 11, 2026) and more.
