Overview & History

Farmer-turned-botanist John Bartram purchased farmland along the Schuylkill River in 1728 and turned it into America’s first botanical garden.

Credited with introducing hundreds of native plants to the Western world, John traveled far and wide, collecting trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants of all kinds.

The literal (and figurative) seeds he planted — with the help of indentured servants and enslaved Black Americans — live on. His botanical gardens and historic buildings were designated a public park in 1891.

Vandaag, Bartram's Tuin flourishes as both a living historic landmark and a lively neighborhood hub. The site centers its Black and Indigenous history, supports the community with affordable local produce, and provides plenty of accessible resources.

1. Stop and smell the roses — and dahlia and Franklinia

The flower gardens at Bartram’s practically scream “look at me!” From spring through fall, there’s always something striking blooming in historic gardens like the Ann Bartram Carr Garden.

Other horticultural standouts: the Sankofa Community Farm, which grows food from across the African diaspora; Bartram “discoveries” like the rare Franklinia tree; and the country’s oldest ginkgo tree.

2. Get up and get active — or not — in the great outdoors

Outdoor adventure, a great workout and a wallet-friendly hang aren’t mutually exclusive.

Fish, boat or kayak along the Schuylkill River; take a long run or bike ride along the trail; or set the kids free on the playground — all for free. Pro-tip: No fishing rod or boat? No problem! The site offers free bike, fishing and boating programs — equipment included.

Looking for something a little more lo-fi, like me? Snag a picnic table or spread a blanket in one of those gorgeous gardens for some R&R.

3. Step back in time with the historic buildings

Want a glimpse of what life as a Bartram was like? Go inside the Bartram House, the family’s simple-yet-stately 18th-century residence. 

Other historic buildings to check out: the Bartram Barn — thought to be the oldest standing barn in Philadelphia — and the coach house.

4. Take a piece of Bartram’s home with you

Grab farm-fresh produce during farmer’s market season. (Honey from Bartram’s own hives is on my shopping list for my next visit.)

Or hit up the shop or plant nursery for a gift — even if the gift is for yourself.

Is Bartram’s Garden free to enter?

Yes! The gardens are totally free to enter and offer a ton of free and low-cost activities. Check the evenementenkalender voor meer informatie. 

When is it open?

Year-round from dawn to dusk. On city holidays, the parking gates might not be open, but feel free to park nearby and walk in on foot.

Is there parking?

Yep! Free parking is available on site. If the parking lot gates are closed during operating hours, you are welcome to park elsewhere and come on in.

Are tours available? 

Private and guided tours aren’t currently available, but Bartram’s Garden offers a low-cost self-guided tour kit that can be mailed to you before your visit and free downloadable audio narrations for popular on-site destinations.

Is Bartram’s Garden accessible to visitors of differing abilities? 

The garden’s physical accessibility varies from section to section, as some pathways are uneven or unpaved. 

A wheelchair is available for visitor use, and with advance notice, golf cart rides can potentially be arranged for easier access to programs and events. Please visit the officiële website for more resources. 

Can I visit during the wintertime? 

Yes! Bartram’s is open 365 days a year, and winter is great for trail runs, riverfront strolls and birdwatching. (The bare trees make for better sightlines!) There’s even an awesome hill for sledding.
