More than 20 local food trucks set up shop for the day at the 300-acre family farm in Delaware County, serving up sweet and savory treats like barbecue, crepes, dumplings, crab fries, water ice and cupcakes. This April, cultural institutions across the city  — in collaboration with the Histories Collaborative of Philadelphia — have teamed up for the first-ever Philadelphia Histories Month, a citywide celebration featuring special events, tours, exhibitions and more. This week:

• Hands-on History: Daily Life in the New Nation at the Founder’s Hall Museum at Girard College: Long before bequeathing his wealth to build his namesake school, famed Philadelphia banker and merchant Stephen Girard had a front-row view to the making of a nation. This intimate hands-on tour invites guests to explore life in the Early Republic through beautiful ceramic and silver artifacts from Girard’s post-war estate (Wednesday).
• Walking Tours at Laurel Hill: For Philadelphia Histories Month, Laurel Hill — the historic garden cemetery and 265-acre arboretum — offers a slate of public programs with history and horticulture themes. This week, don’t miss walking tours highlighting the long history of Laurel Hill East, the can’t-miss moments at Laurel Hill West, and the many artists and art-lovers at rest at Laurel Hill East (Friday through Sunday).
• Opening: Homecoming: The Journey of a Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw Na̱ʼwiti House Post Exhibition at Atelier Gallery: It’s been a long journey for this Kwakwa̱ka̱ʼwakw Na̱ʼwiti House Post, but now the stunning example of First Nations art finally returns to its ancestral home in British Columbia. Before leaving, the sculpture makes one final appearance as part of this free exhibition, opening this week (Friday through Sunday, May 31, 2026).
• Makers of Revolutionary Philadelphia Living History Day 2026 at the Museum of the American Revolution: You know the Founding Fathers who kicked off America’s campaign for independence; now, meet the makers who made the Revolution possible. Over a dozen historical tradespeople, from pepper-pot soup sellers to woodworkers, set up shop for the day to show off their skills and give a peek into Colonial life (Saturday).
• Astronomy Day 2026 at The Franklin Institute: The Franklin Institute invites astronauts-in-training to try on a space suit, take an up-close (and 100% safe!) look at the sun with the help of special equipment, experience an explosive trash-can rocket launch, and more in honor of International Astronomy Day  (zaterdag).

As the birthplace and hometown of some of the most notable figures in jazz history, including Billie Holiday, John Coltrane, Ethel Waters and Dizzy Gillespie, Philly’s jazz roots run deep — and the city is celebrating this April with Philly Jazz Month. Here are some of the city’s top jazz events this week:

• Untethered in Motion at Dilworth Park: Jam out to the sounds and stylings of the dynamic dancers and musicians of the Untethered ensemble. Grab a happy hour drink, sit back, relax and enjoy the free music and dance concert in Dilworth Park (Woensdag).
• Wise Women: Jazz Composer Showcase at Black Squirrel Club: Jazz is alive and well in Philly. Join three rising stars of Philly’s jazz scene, Lora Sherrodd, Bell Thompson and Shawntae Atenzia Cerda, for an evening of all-original compositions at the Black Squirrel Club (Thursday).

Bezoekers van de National Constitution Center kan nu de langverwachte De stichting van Amerika galerie, met high-tech momentopnamen van het Revolutionaire Amerika in dramatisch detail.

De nieuwe permanente galerie vertelt het verhaal van hoe de vroege Amerikanen vochten voor onafhankelijkheid, de Amerikaanse grondwet creëerden, de Bill of Rights opstelden en uiteindelijk de basis legden voor onze democratie. Bezoekers kunnen meeslepende gangen verkennen, in contact komen met tactiele installaties, boeiende video's bekijken en levensechte artefacten bekijken.

Naast andere artefacten bevat de nieuwe ruimte een origineel exemplaar (!) van de Amerikaanse grondwet - een van de slechts 14 overgebleven exemplaren - dat tot 2026 wordt tentoongesteld, samen met zeldzame eerste drukken van 17 grondwetswijzigingen.

Het werk van Ruth E. Carter, tweevoudig Academy Award-winnares voor kostuumontwerp, staat centraal in de African American Museum in Philadelphia’De nieuwste tentoonstelling van, Afrofuturisme in kostuumontwerp, waarin wordt onderzocht hoe Carters handgetekende kostuumontwerpen hebben bijgedragen aan het definiëren van iconische filmpersonages.

De modulaire tentoonstelling — met interactieve elementen — toont bekroonde kostuums en artefacten uit Carters gewaardeerde carrière, waaronder een zeldzame blik op de persoonlijke schetsen en kostuums van de artiest uit Carters privécollectie.

Carter - ook bekend als de meest genomineerde zwarte vrouw in de Oscargeschiedenis - won Oscars voor haar kostuumontwerpen voor de Black Panther films en is de eerste zwarte vrouw die meerdere Academy Awards in welke categorie dan ook heeft gewonnen.

Dwaal door de straten en winkel tot je erbij neervalt. Zeven zondagen lang, in april en mei, is een van Philadelphia's top winkelen en dineren bestemmingen verandert in een autovrije oase.

Tijdens Open straten: West Walnut, pedestrians can shop, dine and mosey along seven car-free blocks while enjoying acoustic music, strolling performers and family-friendly activities from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Music — more specifically, jazz — is in the air as the outdoor fest joins the Philly Jazz Month festivities. Four talented local musicians are popping up throughout the day to serenade guests with swinging melodies and jazzy riffs (Saturday).

De kleinste wezens komen tot leven in de iconische kinderboeken van Eric Carle, zoals De rups die veel honger had. De illustraties van deze Kleine levende dingen staan centraal op de Michener Kunstmuseum’De nieuwste tentoonstelling toont de kunst van de auteur-illustrator.

The exhibit at the Doylestown museum bevat originele kunst uit geliefde Carle-titels zoals: De zeer stille krekel, De zeer drukke spin en Bruine Beer, Bruine Beer, Wat Zie Je? Bezoekers krijgen ook de kans om Carle's vroege schetsen te bekijken en een kijkje te nemen in het proces van de kunstenaar.

Nearly a half-century before Hamilton, Broadway debuted another iconic show focused on the Revolution. And in 2026, Walnut Street Theatre hosts a new production of the 1969 classic 1776: De musical.

De bekroonde hervertelling vertelt het verhaal - dat zich hier in Philadelphia afspeelt - van Adams, Franklin en Jefferson terwijl ze vechten voor onafhankelijkheid tegen een vastgelopen Continentaal Congres, met humor, romantiek en nagelbijtende spanning.

Om de 250e verjaardag van het land te herdenken, creëert The Clay Studio - 's lands grootste organisatie voor keramische kunst - een omvangrijke tentoonstelling toont werk van 27 kunstenaars verspreid over 16 kunst- en cultuursites. Kunstenaars baseren hun creatieve werk op historisch onderzoek dat op deze locaties is uitgevoerd om werken te inspireren die thema's van onafhankelijkheid door de evolutie van Amerika verkennen.

Look out for Radicale americana exhibits at places like De kleistudio, Cliveden, Taller Puertorricaño en nog veel meer. Data en tijden variëren per locatie en de tentoonstelling loopt tot juli.

Met hun eigen roemrijke geschiedenis, de Philadelphia Museum of Art en de Pennsylvania Academie voor Schone Kunsten (de allereerste kunstschool en het allereerste museum van het land) verdiepen zich in de rijkdom en diversiteit van de Amerikaanse kunstgeschiedenis voor deze blockbuster tentoonstelling, getimed om samen te vallen met de Vijfhonderdjarig jubileum.

Threading together 300 years of American art, the collection — which includes pieces from Phillies Owner John Middleton and his wife Leigh’s incredible personal collection — features over 1,000 portraits, sculptures, furniture, photographs and more across both museums. Viewers find some of art’s biggest names — including Mary Cassatt and Charles Willson Peale — exhibited side-by-side with oft-overlooked Black, Indigenous, immigrant and historically underrepresented artists and contemporary talents.

Bonus: Bring the kiddos with you to the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts for interactive crafts and free museum admission with advance registration during Family Day (zondag).

Toen de wereld hen, hun werk en hun onderwerpen probeerde uit te wissen, eisten deze in Philly gevestigde kunstenaars hun ruimte op - op hun eigen voorwaarden, met hun eigen werk.

Ontvouwt zich niet in één, maar in twee Philly musea. Woodmere en de Pennsylvania Academie voor Schone Kunsten — Lichamen en zielen verkent hoe het werk van kunstenaars de complexiteit van de menselijke ervaring benadrukte, gender, seksualiteit, relaties en meer aankaartte, compassie cultiveerde en zich een betere wereld voorstelde.

De krachtige tentoonstelling laat meer dan 130 schilderijen, tekeningen en sculpturen zien, van kunstenaars als Barbara Bullock en Marta Sanchez en uit de collectie van kunstverzamelaars Robert en Frances Coulborn Kohler uit Philadelphia.

Je kunt veel over iemand vertellen aan de hand van zijn of haar huis. Voor de Shakers - een religieuze gemeenschap die ontstond in het 18e-eeuwse Engeland en bloeide in de Verenigde Staten - strekten hun sterke overtuigingen over gemeenschap, arbeid en gelijkheid zich uit tot elk facet van het leven, inclusief hun meubels, architectuur en alledaagse goederen.

Een combinatie van historische, door Shakers gemaakte kunstvoorwerpen, rechtstreeks uit de Testament van Ann Lee met hedendaagse kunstwerken geïnspireerd door de gemeenschap, deze nieuwe tentoonstelling bij de Instituut voor Hedendaagse Kunst onderzoekt hoe de groep een onderscheidende visuele taal heeft ontwikkeld die wordt gekenmerkt door eenvoud, innovatie en doelgerichtheid.

Deze wereldpremière tentoonstelling, aangeboden door The Franklin Institute en Universal Destinations & Experiences biedt een kijkje achter de schermen bij de innovatie en wereldopbouw die in elk Universal-pretpark plaatsvindt.

Met een oppervlakte van 18.000 vierkante meter en acht overweldigende galerijen toont de interactieve ervaring meer dan 100 voertuigen, rekwisieten en andere originele artefacten van wereldberoemde attracties, attracties en liveshows. En zoals het Franklin Institute betaamt, heeft de tentoonstelling een educatieve focus, waarbij alle technologie, techniek en kunstzinnigheid die komen kijken bij het ontwerpen van pretparken wordt uitgelicht.

This beloved culinary treasure returns to the heart of South Philly’s FDR Park, ushering in outdoor market season. A nationaal bekende seizoensmarktde Zuidoost-Aziatische markt verschijnt elk weekend (met uitzondering van speciale evenementen) en biedt een aantal van de beste Laotiaanse, Khmer, Thaise, Vietnamese en Indonesische gerechten in de stad.

De reis van de Verklaring De tentoonstelling volgt de geschiedenis van het oprichtingsverdrag van Amerika en de voortdurende invloed ervan, dat wereldwijd meer dan 100 onafhankelijkheidsbewegingen heeft geïnspireerd.

De erfenis van de Verklaring wordt onderzocht aan de hand van documenten, kunstwerken en artefacten, waaronder de stoel van Thomas Jefferson, een door markies de Lafayette geannoteerd ontwerp van de Franse Verklaring van Rechten, de gevangenisbank waar Martin Luther King Jr. “Brief uit een gevangenis in Birmingham, een spinnewiel geschonken door Gandhi en nog veel meer.

In 1803 gaf president Thomas Jefferson Meriwether Lewis en William Clark de opdracht om de westelijke gebieden van het land te verkennen na de Louisiana Purchase. Maar wist je dat Philadelphia's Academie voor Natuurwetenschappen bewaart bijna alle originele dagboeken van de ontdekkingsreizigers en bewaard gebleven specimens met betrekking tot hun botanisch onderzoek in zijn Lewis & Clark Herbarium?
