7 Very Philly & Totally Quirky Holiday Traditions

An underwater Santa, a flaming phoenix and a Christmas cannoli? Philly does holiday traditions differently …

Unless you’re living under a (jingle bell) rock, there are certain holiday traditions that make Greater Philadelphia a veritable winter wonderland.

Philly loves its holiday traditions, and ’tis the season to roll out the red-and-green carpet for some of the quirkier Philly-area jawns, from the Burn Bird at the Festival del pájaro de fuego de Phoenixville a Papá Noel submarinista at Adventure Aquarium.

Burst into song while waiting in line at Pastelería Isgro o Panadería Hermanos Termini. Grab an inflatable lawn reindeer at Kindy’s Christmas Factory Outlet.

With a subtle nod to “tales of the glories, of Christmases long, long ago,” these are the quirky and beloved holiday season traditions that must be experienced in person — and with plenty of eggnog in your system.

Buy something weird at Kindy’s Christmas Factory Outlet

Through Sunday, December 20, 2026

Kindy’s Christmas Factory Outlet (think: HomeGoods meets Clark Griswold) is the kind of Philly tradition you won’t find in guidebooks.

This no-frills warehouse outlet store, located at the Philadelphia Quartermaster Depot, delivers an unconventional shopping experience that’s a big part of the store’s identity. It’s an enormous time machine of eclectic decorations, with employees shouting across the aisles to point you in the direction of inflatable penguins, glitter snowmen and lawn reindeer — and that’s all part of the charm.

Kindy’s gets two visits from Santa Claus — November 28, 2026 and December 5, 2026 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. — while serving as the unofficial supplier of lights for the Miracle on South 13th Street. The store also frequently raffles off Águilas de Filadelfia tickets as part of its annual “12 Days of Giveaways” promotion. (Throwing snowballs is optional.)

Lo que debes saber antes de ir: Wear a warm coat! There’s no central heating inside this World War II-era building.

Scuba Santa (real name: Mike Hagen) is a celebrity of sorts since first putting on the velvety red suit and white beard while swimming with the sharks at Acuario Aventura en Camden.

He’s a trained scuba diver who taps on the glass, making kids smile and laugh during one of the Philly area’s most cherished newer traditions: Navidad bajo el agua. Expect indoor snow flurries, sharks, sea turtles and the world’s tallest underwater Christmas tree.

Lo que debes saber antes de ir: Christmas Underwater is included with admisión general to Adventure Aquarium.

See a live ice sculpture carving at Fishtown Freeze

De regreso por octavo año consecutivo, Fishtown Freeze brings big Snow Miser vibes across Frankford Avenue, with places like Mural City Cellars, Garage Bar, LMNO, The Battery and Rivers Casino transforming into live ice-carving sites.

Ice Sculpture Philly curates at least two dozen blocks of chiseled artwork (on view until it melts!) — everything from Gritty and LeBron to the Leg Lamp from Una historia de Navidad — on the first day. Fishtown hosts a two-day Holiday Shopping Spree (that Saturday and the following Sunday) where neighborhood businesses offer special deals and holiday perks, complimentary food and drinks, and photo opportunities with Santa Claus.

There’s also a free holiday trolley available to cruise Girard Avenue. Stops get marked with tinsel-wrapped candy canes.

No te lo pierdas: The Phinato at Bodegas Mural City, a Philly spin on a classic Italian Chinato. This winter-ready sweet vermouth gets released in early December.

“Burn the Bird” at the Phoenixville Firebird Festival

Everyone is familiar with the story of the mythological Phoenix rising from the ashes. This is similar, with a Philly twist.

En Festival del pájaro de fuego de Phoenixville, started in 2004, draws approximately 10,000 people to Reservoir Park every year to celebrate creativity and the arts, and the can-do attitude of one of Chester County’s historic steel towns.

Preparations begin three months prior, when a group of volunteers builds a 20-foot-tall wooden sculpture (known as the Burn Bird) in the shape of a phoenix. Then it gets set ablaze amid the din of live drummers, as dancers and firebreathers set the mood. The festival begins at 3 p.m., with the lighting at 6:30 p.m.

Want to be an official torchbearer, charged with igniting the bird? You can enter a raffle for the honor.

Un dato curioso: Inside the burning phoenix sculpture are 150 tiny clay birds, which are retrieved and returned to the artists who made them.

Cross the Delaware River at Washington Crossing

December 13 & 25, 2026

When General George Washington led his rebellious troops across the icy Delaware River on Christmas night in 1776, he probably didn’t envision reenactments (two!) happening every year on the banks in Bucks County.

En Parque Histórico Washington Crossing, about 300 volunteers and 48 boat crew members (many with the Friends of Washington Crossing Park) mimic the most famed crossing in history as visitors flock to the historic site to watch. It has become a spectacle over the years, with musket shots ringing out and fife-and-drum ensembles.

This year, you get two chances to experience it: December 13, 2026 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on December 25, 2026 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. for the 74th annual reenactment.

Lo que debes saber antes de ir: Inscripción anticipada is required for both reenactments as capacity is limited. Also, stay for lunch or do Breakfast with Santa at the Posada Washington Crossing.

Ride a SEPTA Jolly Trolley on Girard Avenue

Estacional

The sweet hum of the jingling Jolly Trolleys was sorely missed from 2020 to 2023 after the vehicles underwent a restoration project. Now, the green-and-cream trolleys are back running down Girard Avenue, from Brewerytown a Fishtown en SEPTA Route 15, and once again setting a magical scene for the holidays.

Giving big Polar Express vibes, these vintage-looking streetcars get adorned with festive wreaths, garland and multicolored lights. The quirky tradition traces its roots back to 1948, when a conductor named Martha Kashner decorated her trolley for Christmas, or so the legend goes.

No te lo pierdas: SEPTA new merch shop características a very special “ugly” sweater for the holidays, featuring three classic bus designs.

Wait in line at Isgro Pastries or Termini Brothers Bakery

Estacional

Grabbing dessert for the family Christmas party is a hard job. You can’t pick something up weeks in advance and expect it to still be fresh on Christmas Day, hence the long lines wrapping around the block outside Panadería Hermanos Termini y Pastelería Isgro.

From panettone and pizzelle to biscotti and cannoli, no holiday feast — especially not in an Italian-American household — is complete without la dolce vita. At these two beloved South Philly bakeries, the owners recognize their customers’ commitment to baked goods.

That’s why they often bring out shots of limoncello or sambuca to those cold pastry warriors waiting in line, along with free samples and hot beverages. Sometimes, you’ll hear a house band performing Christmas carols in the shop and communal song breaking out in the line.

No te lo pierdas: Homemade panettone and ricotta cookies at Pastelería Isgro are must-have desserts, as well as the traditional Sicilian cucidati fig cookies at Panadería Hermanos Termini.
