It’s official: Philadelphia’s culinary community can — and does — do it all.

In few other places could a city renowned for its cheesesteaks and roast pork sandwiches foster one of the nation’s most robust vegetarian and vegan food scenes — with new additions popping up every year.

Philly’s collection of vegan and vegetarian eateries includes upscale fine-dining restaurants (Pietramala and Vedge), diners (The Tasty), delis (LUHV Vegan Deli), and everything in between. (And that doesn’t even include dozens of restaurants serving vegetarian- and vegan-friendly cuisines — like Thai, Indian and Ethiopian — around the city.)

Factor in the cafes (PS & Co.), bars (Charlie was a sinner.) and bakeries (Dottie’s Donuts) that specialize in plant-based delights, and you are covered, breakfast through dinner and beyond.

Read on for some of Philadelphia’s best vegan and vegetarian dining spots.

20th Street Pizza

A 100% vegan pizzeria in Center City …

Pizza is the universal love language. Who doesn’t love a warm slice of dough topped with slightly sweet tomato sauce, ooey-gooey cheese and their favorite toppings? The pies at the 100% vegan pizzeria 20th Street Pizza are magical — naturally leavened, thin crust-ed creations loaded with fresh and locally sourced ingredients, sans the pesky animal products. The pizza parlor’s offerings include your classic pepperoni and white, plus specialty pies — like the Balboa with crushed meatballs and pistachio pesto — and calzones.

If year-round Halloween is your aesthetic, then Monster Vegan is the place to be. Dishing out comfort foods and creepy cocktails, this vegan monster mash complements its spooky decor with a neon-lit bar and classic black-and-white horror movies on-screen. The film-inspired menu features starters, sandwiches, salads and pasta, while the killer drink selection includes brews, wines, classic and alcohol-free cocktails, and specialty drinks like the “Tomb of the Tiki” bevvies, which swap the tropical for the macabre and are served in large skulls.

Visit Philly staff says...

Disclaimer: I’m not vegan, tofu is just OK and there is no substitute for moo-cow cheese. Yet I absolutely love this place. Imagine a cozy restaurant fused with a cyberpunk bar, and then add in old-school horror flicks — as a treat. The drinks are fun, the food is tasty and the vibes are immaculate. But don’t get it twisted: The menu really is completely vegan. The ricotta? Vegan. The calamari? Vegan. The chicken cutlets? Believe it or not: vegan.
