In celebration of Black Music Month, Philly honors local trailblazers, institutions and communities with an inspirational evening of performances and awards.

Some of the city’s biggest names — including Leslie Odom Jr., Jazmine Sullivan, Black Thought and Questlove — got their start at the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA), and this year’s concert lineup celebrates the school’s legacy with performances from CAPA alumni like singers Seraiah Nicole and Julian King.

The Gran Salon & Plaza at Esperanza Arts Center hosts a World Cup Family Watch Party to celebrate Latino culture when Mexico takes on Czechia in Group A action. Presented in partnership with Finanta and the Mexican Consulate of Philadelphia, soccer fans can bounce between the venue’s outdoor space and inside event space while listening to live music and grabbing local bites.

Just Us at the Barnes Foundation is a groundbreaking new exhibition from Mural Art Philadelphia’s Rec Crew, a 24-week job readiness and life skills program for justice-impacted young adults.

By giving a platform to aspiring artists at State Correctional Institution Phoenix, a maximum-security prison in Montgomery County, this powerful collaboration examines the challenges of incarceration and the resilience of hope. The goal? A better tomorrow.

Just Us, on view in the first-floor classroom of the Collection Gallery, is the culmination of a joint restorative justice initiative started in 2018.

The Uptown Theater in North Philly hosts a community celebration honoring Black Music Month through live music and rare artifacts. First, let’s talk about the day’s soundtrack.

The Scratch Brothers, a kid DJ duo kicking “new skool flava,” get the party started at Baba Yahya’s Garden (2229 N. Broad Street) before giving way to a free pop-up sound recording workshop.

Other highlights include: a pop-up museum inside the historic theater’s lobby — remember, Uptown Theater was a stop on the famed Chitlin’ Circuit — along with a Tell Your Uptown Story activation featuring on-air personalities from WJYN 98.5 FM.

Note: This is a free event, but organizers suggest making a $20 donation.

This Saturday, Historic RittenhouseTown honors the First Paper Maker in America. In 1690, long before Wi-Fi and word processors, William Rittenhouse established a paper mill on Wissahickon Avenue (off of Lincoln Drive) and set the standard for how people printed newspapers and pamphlets. Discover the handmade beginnings of America’s paper trail and the mill that made it happen.

Other featured Philadelphia “firsts” include inventions like the Slinky, cultural milestones such as Mother’s Day and significant locations like the first African Methodist Episcopal church. The free celebrations take place at the original location of each first (or in spaces that represent where these significant milestones occurred) and include guest speakers, a sculpture, monthly marquee events and historic deep dives by Once Upon a Nation.

All the gnomes and fairies hiding in the woodlands of the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education in the city’s Roxborough section come out to play once a year at the Philly Fairy Festival.

Anything you can imagine is possible here. Build fairy houses and explore the Fairytale Trail. Choose-your-own-activity throughout the site’s woodland trails. Try a potion at the Alchemists Guild. Frolic through a Fairy Circle Labyrinth.

• Wale & Smino at The Fillmore: With introspective lyrics, a decade in the game, and multi-platinum hits like Mal y Lotus Flower Bomb, Wale can rap circles around some of your favorite emcees. So, naturally, the self-proclaimed Ambassador of Rap for the Capital needed someone of similar prowess to join him on tour, but who could possibly keep up? Smino would like a word. The rap heavyweights team up for an incredible hip-hop doubleheader at the Fillmore this weekend (Saturday).

• Cathedral Concert: Let Freedom Sing at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter & Paul: The Cathedral and Archdiocesan Choirs fill the stunning Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter & Paul with a joyful noise in honor of America’s 250th anniversary, uniting for a rousing performance of American anthems and sacred songs (Sunday). Wawa Welcome America, the largest Independence Day celebration in the nation (and one of the largest free festivals in the country — period), grows even bigger in 2026 to mark 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence right here in Philly.

As always, Wawa Welcome America brings dozens of free concerts and events, with a whopping six days of fireworks and other surprises during the 16-day celebration — including performances by award-winning superstars Idina Menzel, Queen Latifah, Eve, Kirk Franklin and more.
