You may, however, want to heed the word of the Prix de la Fondation James Beard, which has bestowed nearly 60 honors on Philadelphia establishments — across 40 restaurants, bakeries, bars and their chefs — in the last five years alone.
The list of Philly locales honored by the organization is extensive, distinguished and diverse.
Below is every Philly establishment recognized with a James Beard honor since 2022. There have been so many spots honored in just the last few years that we don’t have room to include the dozens more spots honored in the years prior. Check the James Beard Foundation’s site officiel for the complete list.
A titre indicatif, demi-finalistes La liste des lauréats est longue et se résume à la liste des meilleurs. candidats, and from that group, one vainqueur est sélectionné dans chaque catégorie.
Semifinalist: Best New Bar, 2026
Almanach — the Japanese-style speakeasy tucked away above husband-and-wife restaurateurs Vy To and Victor Ng’s Old City omakase, Ogawa Sushi & Kappo — has caused quite the stir, gaining the attention of major local experts et big national names alike.
Featuring a drink program by 2024 James Beard Award-winner Danny Childs, the intimate cocktail bar offers elegantly crafted cocktails with seasonal variations of classic drinks — Old Fashioneds, Manhattans, martinis and more — alongside original creations, all using only peak-season fruits, vegetables and botanicals.
Also on the small plates menu: beloved American eats with a Japanese twist, like wagyu hot dogs, wasabi garlic fries, miso-glazed chicken wings and more from Ogawa chef Carlos Wills.

Semifinalist: Emerging Chef (Frankie Ramirez), 2026
After cutting his teeth in some of Philly’s most popular kitchens, including nearby LMNO, chef Frankie Ramirez — with wife Veronica — channels that hard-won wisdom and memories from his native Mexico City into Amá.
Named for the couple’s mothers (Amá being short for “mamá”) and inspired by traditional Mexican kitchens in both aesthetic and cuisine, the upscale Fishtown restaurant proudly showcases Mexican staples and spirits through contemporary techniques. Bring a friend and dig into the shareable menu of tacos, tostados, ceviche and aguachile, plus tequila- and mezcal-forward cocktails.

Semifinalist: Best New Restaurant, 2026
You don’t have to look far to dine around the world with chef Evan Snyder leading Emmett. The restaurant takes wood-fired Levantine cuisine and infuses it with Mediterranean, French, Italian, North African and Middle Eastern influences.
The eclectic menu highlights savory bites like rye tartlets with wagyu, horseradish and smoked mustard; sesame madeleines with ras al hangout butter and apple mandarin jam; and dry-aged duck accompanied by sweet date malfouf. Plus, you can look forward to a full bar with natural wines, craft cocktails and a zero-proof beverage program.

Semifinalist: Outstanding Pastry Chef or Baker (Justine MacNeil), 2026
Take a Roman holiday thanks to husband-and-wife duo Ed Crochet and Justine MacNeil. The couple’s bright Kensington cafe embodies the spirit of an Italian caffetteria with an all-day menu of pastries, coffee and breakfast sammies (on housemade bread!), plus homemade pasta, Mediterranean street eats and lunch sandwiches after 11 a.m.
But back to the pastries. Stacked high with all manner of incredible baked goods, Fiore’s pastry case is the handiwork of 2026 James Beard semifinalist MacNeil, who churns out a rotating selection of bomboloni, cornetti, croissants, cookies and more on the daily.

C'est l'ambiance qui règne à Her Place Supper Club, where the 2025 and 2026 honoree for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic serves a family-style fixed-price menu that feels like one of her college soirees — a sentiment shared by Esquire et Bon Appétit, both of which named the Rittenhouse Square spot one of America’s best new restaurants.
Maybe it’s the Italian-, French- and Jewish-influenced menu, or maybe it’s the warm sourdough chocolate chip cookie each guest receives at the end of the meal.

Semifinalist: Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic (Omar Tate and Cybille St.Aude-Tate), 2026,2024
History unfolds across the plate at Chèvrefeuille sur North Broad.
Paying tribute to Black flavors, cultures and foodways from around the world, menu items like catfish and peppers, or dombrey with agnolotti and curried beef, shine on their own; but as part of the ambitious restaurant’s signature four-course tasting menu, they tell an even richer story, penned by chefs (and married couple) Omar Tate and Cybille St. Aude-Tate.
The drink list is just as bold, with spirited Afrocentric creations, like the Zou Zou (a plantain-infused cocktail) and wines by Black and local producers on offer.
Cybille and Omar welcome you like an old friend, and the spacious dining room and bar feature Black and African art installations — snapshots that give you a deep sense of heritage and ancestry. But the true star is the menu, with elevated prix-fixe options that bring ingredients like plantains, black-eyed peas, collard greens and crawfish to new heights. You’ll also find innovations like Mulled Wine Water Ice (!) and the Black Cake cocktail, which was quite possibly one of the best drinks I’ve ever had.

Semifinalist: Outstanding Beverage Professional (Dan Suro-Cipolloni and David Suro-Piñera), 2026
It’s a family affair at these stylish standouts for Mexican cuisine in Rittenhouse Square.
James Beard Media Award winner David Suro-Piñera and his late business partner Annette Cipolloni (affectionately known as La Jefa, or the boss, by family and staff alike) first opened Tequilas in 1986 to highlight the flavors of Guadalajara with contemporary flair.
Nowadays, David and Annette’s son, Dan Suro-Cipolloni, carries on his family’s legacy, channeling the spirit of his father’s hometown and Philadelphia into La Jefa, the adjoining casual cafe and cocktail bar serving wines, cocktails, brunch bites and caffeinated goodness.
The team calls its style of cooking Guadaladelphia, a mix of Guadalajara and Philly. I appreciate how seafood- and veggie-forward the menu is with great options for everyone — vegetarians, vegans and meat-eaters alike.

Torréfacteurs de café, located in the Kensington neighborhood, made its mark on Philadelphia in 2018 when it became the first and only Vietnamese specialty coffee roaster in the city.
The secret to the exceptional taste of the coffee most certainly lies in the terrain from which many of the beans are sourced — a farm located at 1,400 meters above sea level, where rich volcanic soil makes for slow and even development, yielding nutty, black tea and floral profiles.
The shop has a social mission too, donating a significant portion of its proceeds to 12 PLUS, a nonprofit that partners with public high schools in Philadelphia and Camden, N.J., to increase educational equity. It also employs students and alumni from partner schools.

Nestled in Queen Village, Petit poisson is known not only for Chef Alexander Yoon’s seasonal seafood creations sprinkled with Asian influences but also for the intimate atmosphere that comes from having just 16 seats.

Distingué comme demi-finaliste du concours du meilleur chef en 2022, Adam Diltz, chef du restaurant Elwood en Fishtown, breathes new life into down-home recipes showcasing Pennsylvania ingredients — with a dash of Pennsylvania Dutch tradition — across a menu of rustic, rural family-style entrees.
The crowd-pleasing spot is committed to nose-to-tail cooking (using every part of the animal), meaning dishes like the guinea hen and whole Gobbler’s Ridge Farm rabbit offer diners a chance to try cuts they might not otherwise sample. Mais le chemin a été long. South Philly Barbacoa started as a food cart before opening its first brick-and-mortar in 2016.
It then moved into El Compadre in the Italian Market the next year and struck out on its own again a year later before settling inside offshoot Casa Mexico en 2024.
